Candle Care & Safety
At Sophie Lily Designs we want you to enjoy your candles to the fullest. Proper candle care ensures a longer burn time, better scent throw, and safer use. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your candles:
1. Trim the Wick
Before lighting your candle, always trim the wick to about 1/4 inch. This helps the candle burn more evenly, prevents soot buildup, and reduces the risk of a large flame. Trim the wick each time you light your candle.
2. Burn Time
For the best experience, let your candle burn long enough to form a full melt pool across the surface (typically 2-3 hours for most candles). This prevents tunneling and ensures an even burn. Don’t burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time to avoid overheating and to ensure safe use.
3. Keep Candles Away from Drafts
Place your candle away from fans, open windows, or air conditioning vents. Drafts can cause uneven burning and make the candle burn too quickly. Keeping your candle in a calm, still area will ensure a better experience.
4. Never Leave a Burning Candle Unattended
Always keep a burning candle within sight out of reach of children and pets. Never leave a candle burning unattended, and be sure to extinguish it before leaving the room or going to bed.
5. Use a Candle Snuffer
When it’s time to extinguish your candle, use a candle snuffer instead of blowing it out. This prevents wax splatter and minimizes smoke. You can also gently blow out the flame, but a snuffer is always the best option.
6. Allow Wax to Cool Before Moving
Always allow your candle to cool before moving it. Hot wax can spill and cause burns. Let it fully solidify before handling.
7. Storage Tips
Store your candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. Keeping them in a box or container will also help protect the surface and wick from dust.
8. Burning in a Safe Area
Place your candle on a heat-resistant surface and away from anything flammable (like curtains, paper, or fabrics). Always use a proper candle holder or tray to catch any melting wax.
9. Recycling Your Candle
Once your candle has burned down, consider repurposing the container! Clean out any remaining wax and reuse the jar for storage, as a vase, or a decorative piece.
